Encanto to Sir Lady Pancake to Springtime in USC, the cake entries in the Upper St. Clair Bethel Park Rotary, Breakfast Club contest were on point!
After a 7-year hiatus, the Upper St. Clair Bethel Park Rotary, Breakfast Club brought the time-honored Bake-Off tradition back to the annual Community Day celebration. “We could not be more thrilled by the number of applications we received for this event” said Leigh Harkreader, Co-chair and President Elect of the local club. “We had 29 entries, from 5 different schools within the district, with children as young as kindergarten through 7th grade.”
Open to all USC residents K-8th grade, the entries ranged from favorite book to movie, to bakers’ choice. Cake designs ranged from Minecraft, Taylor Swift and Harry Potter to USC Panthers in Paradise, this years’ community day theme. From cake concept to design, execution, to grade level, age, and overall level of difficulty, the three judges worked together to carefully examine all cakes. After roughly 45 minutes Matthew Cosgrove, USC Eisenhower Art teacher, Colleen Miles from the USC Library and Diane Atkins announced the winners. Each winner received a small cash prize, and most notably the Best in Show winner, Caitlyn Foil, received $50 for her “Planting a Rainbow” themed cake.
