Overview of Award

The Rotary of Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Breakfast Club will present two (2) “Service Above Self” Awards in the amount of $1,000 each to outstanding High School seniors who exemplify the Rotary International motto of “Service Above Self.” Rotary International is one of the largest service organizations in the world. Our mission is to "provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.” This award recognizes those students who have displayed exemplary humanitarian service with a focus on active involvement in helping others.

 Requirements for Submission

  • 300-500 word typed essay entitled “Why Community Service is Important to Me.”
  • Two references: One personal reference and one service reference are required, including name/connection/email/phone.
  • On a separate document, the student will share a summary of all applicable service experiences:

a. High School service project participation

b. Local community service participation (not included in High       School section)

c. National/International Service project participation d. Extracurricular activities

 Who can apply?

This award is open to any high school senior residing in the Municipality of Bethel Park or Upper St. Clair Township and enrolled in a public or private secondary school.

 What is the deadline for Submission?

Applications must be received no later than April 24th.

 How many will be awarded?

One award for a Bethel Park resident and one award for an Upper St. Clair resident for a total of two (2).

 What is the review process?

All candidates’ submissions will be evaluated by the Rotary of Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Breakfast Club Service Above Self Committee on completeness, overall merit, and demonstration of our “Service Above Self” motto. The award will be based on a review of the student’s involvement in the following categories:

    • Community service or activities
    • National/International service o School service
    • Other extracurricular activities

 Who do I send my submission to?

Submissions are to be sent to the Service Above Self Award committee chair at Pete.m2481@yahoo.com prior to the April 24th deadline.

 How & When will I be notified if selected?

These awards will be presented at the winner’s school awards ceremony.

 Terms of Acceptance

Award funds must be used for any continuing education-related expenses, such as 2/4 year undergraduate degree, housing and/or equipment for school (i.e. computer, books, room/board), Trade school fees/enrollment or continuing education enrollment, etc.
